In this post, I’ve compiled a list of the 12 gluten-free restaurants and shops in Sonoma Valley that can accommodate gluten-free guests, including those sensitive to cross-contamination.

I hope this post helps reduce any anxiety associated with gluten-free travel during your next Sonoma Valley gluten-free getaway.

The Best of Sonoma Gluten-Free

Before We Jump Into the Good Stuff!

This post contains a list of Sonoma Valley gluten-free finds tested by myself or recommended by gluten-free travelers sensitive to cross-contamination. I’ve marked all the restaurants I’ve personally tested as “Trudy Traveler Recommended” restaurants.

Disclaimer: The following recommendations are based on personal experiences and insights shared by fellow gluten-free travelers. Please recognize that not all mentioned restaurants are exclusively gluten-free. However, some may have dedicated prep spaces, while others may not. Dining at any non-dedicated gluten-free restaurant entails inherent risks for celiac travelers. Any individuals dining at any of the mentioned restaurants are choosing to do so, exercising their discretion and risk.

Sonoma Gluten-Free: Plaza

B&V Whiskey Bar & Grille

Trudy Traveler Recommended

We stopped at B&V Whiskey Bar & Grille when exploring Sonoma Plaza and were surprised at how much we liked it. Although not a dedicated gluten-free restaurant, they understand cross-contamination and have a dedicated gluten-free fryer.

They offer several items that can be prepared gluten-free, including items made with gluten-free buns and pasta,  I particularly enjoyed their fries.

Our server was great and attentive to my gluten-free needs! I always confirm when I receive my food that it has been prepared gluten-free.  Upon asking, our server confirmed with the kitchen that the fries had been cooked in their dedicated fryer. I appreciate that level of care from a server!

The server recommended their house cabernet, which was surprisingly delicious and one of my favorites during our trip.

LaSalette Restaurant

La Salette was one of the restaurants I had hoped to try on our visit, but unfortunately, we ran out of time. Known for its ambiance and trendy twist on traditional Portuguese cuisine, it is a popular restaurant in Sonoma.

While the menu at LaSalette does not list gluten-free options, customers have noted that the servers are well-versed in adapting many dishes to cater to gluten-free diets. This flexibility has resulted in positive feedback from numerous gluten-free travelers, who have enjoyed dishes such as fish prepared with gluten-free breadcrumbs and gluten-free fries.

This upscale restaurant is an excellent Sonoma gluten-free find; however, be prepared to pay for the quality. Most dinner entrees cost between $30-$40.

The Girl & The Fig

Trudy Traveler Recommended

Offering their self-proclaimed “country food with a French passion,” The Girl & the Fig is a popular Sonoma plaza find.

Although gluten-free options are not listed on the menu, travelers report they accommodate food intolerances without sacrificing flavor. Traveler favorites include the duck confit, mussels, and wild flounder meunière.

El Dorado Kitchen

El Dorado, located at the hotel by the same name, offers a seasonally driven California menu boasting ingredients sourced within Sonoma County. El Dorado comes highly recommended by gluten-free customers, including several who have eaten there numerous times and have never gotten sick from cross-contamination.

The servers are reported to be knowledgeable about gluten-free options and cross-contamination. Although not listed on the menu, most items can be gluten-free.

Gluten-free customers recommended the filet mignon and risotto.

Maya Restaurant

Maya offers food inspired by the Mayan region of Mexico. Its vibrant and spicy flavors, originating from the Yucatan, are fan favorites.

Most dishes are gluten-free, and all items containing gluten are conveniently labeled on the menu with an asterisk.  The servers are also knowledgeable about gluten-free needs and can answer questions.

Customers have confirmed that the chips are prepared in a gluten-free fryer, although I always recommend asking for yourself.

Sonoma Plaza: The Fun Stuff!

Sweet Scoops Homeade Ice Cream

Trudy Traveler Recommended

I should begin by saying that ice cream is not my sweet treat of choice. However, I genuinely enjoyed my ice cream cone. Yes, friends, I said “cone.” I don’t think I’ve had an ice cream “cone” in over twelve years.

Sweet Scoop is a popular spot in Sonoma Plaza, and by mid-afternoon, the line was out the door.  Their popularity originates from their delicious array of homemade, small-batch ice cream flavors.

They regularly post their daily flavors on Instagram if you want to check them out in advance.

I know you’re thinking about cross-contamination, and so was I… but in addition to making gluten-free cones, they have specific flavors set aside to prevent cross-contamination.

Eek! I love places that truly understand the needs of those with celiac disease. It’s such a treat to be able to eat like everyone else.

I highly recommend you try Sweet Scoops while in Sonoma.

Harvey's Donut Bar

Trudy Traveler Recommended

After hearing numerous gluten-free travelers rant about Harvey’s Donut Bar, I couldn’t wait to visit. We weren’t staying in Sonoma, so I only had one opportunity to visit since they are only open on weekends. Wouldn’t you know it… by early afternoon, the gluten-free donuts were sold out.  Ugh! Lesson learned, friends: Go early so you don’t miss out. To say I was disappointed was an understatement.

Unfortunately, I can’t personally describe them to you. However, they are described as sweet and fluffy donuts like those from our pre-gluten-free days.

Harvey’s owner is also gluten-free, so all the donuts are prepared in a separate kitchen and packaged individually to prevent cross-contamination.

If nothing else, do it for me, and visit Harvey’s Donut Bar when you’re in Sonoma.

Sonoma Gluten-Free: Further Out

Boon Fly Cafe

best of sonoma gluten-free: banana bread covered in creme fresche, blueberries, bananas and strawberries

Trudy Traveler Recommended

The Boon Fly Cafe is located about 15 minutes from the Sonoma Plaza on the way to Napa.  The cafe is located at the Carneros Resort & Spa and has the vibe of a country cafe with a modern twist.

And yes, I did look up what a Boon Fly is. Well, it isn’t a what it’s a who.  Boon Fly was a Carneros pioneer who planted orchards and vineyards in the region during the mid-1800s.

The cafe offers a gluten-free menu, and can accommodate those sensitive to cross-contamination.

We ate way too much in the name of “research,” but friends, I did it all for you!

I had to try the banana bread pictured above.  The flavor was great, and the berries were perfectly sweet.  My only complaint was that it was slightly dry, as some gluten-free breads can be after a couple of days, however it was delicious! To their credit, I’d read other reviews about the banana bread and everyone else reported it was slightly crispy along the edges and soft in the middle.

I then enjoyed a made-to-order omelet with a side of crispy shredded hashbrowns, which was absolutely delicious! Eric ordered the breakfast burrito packed full of eggs, cheese, bacon, hashbrowns and who knows what else.  It was humungous!  We were both stuffed when we left, but it was well worth it.

The seating is somewhat limited, so I recommend arriving early for breakfast, although reservations are available for dinner. Also, like other prices in the area, you can expect to spend around $20+ for a breakfast entree.

You can check out their menu here to see the array of gluten-free options.

MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa

The Layla restaurant at MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa is another highly recommended Sonoma gluten-free gem.  Located in downtown Sonoma, it is easily accessible, offering a Mediterranean kitchen dining experience featuring healthy, organic options and locally sourced ingredients.

Celiac travelers report dining here multiple times and no issues with cross-contamination.  Despite the menu not listing gluten-free items, it is reported that the staff are very knowledgeable and can point out items that can be prepared gluten-free.  It is also reported that the kitchen has a dedicated gluten-free space and equipment to prevent cross-contamination.

The breakfast selections are reported to be somewhat limited, although they do offer gluten-free bread prepared in a separate toaster, and the hash browns are also celiac-safe. The dinner menu offers a lot of gluten-free options, including desserts.

Sonoma County Gluten-Free: Healdsburg

Black Oak Coffee

Trudy Traveler Recommended

Black Oak Coffee is located in Healdsburg less than an hour north of Sonoma.  One our days in wince country we headed to Healdsburg to peruse the downtown and check out some of their wineries.

Although the quantity seemed limited, I was pleasantly surprised they had a gluten-free option in their pastry case.  I happily enjoyed their most and delicious coffee cake with a cinnamon and brown sugar crumble on top. Yum!

The line was long but the coffee cake was worth it.

Bravas Tapas

Trudy Traveler Recommended

best of sonoma gluten-free - grilled octopus dish, salad and roasted cauliflower

After an enjoyable tasting at J Winery, we headed to Healdsburg for lunch.  We loved the wines and gluten-free pairing at J Winery.  You can learn more about J Winery and our sparkling wine extravaganza here!

Travel & Leisure rated Tapas Bravas one of the top tapas restaurants in the U.S., and a great option for gluten-free travelers.

Their restaurant has a comfortable and cozy feel, and you can dine outdoors on their lovely patio.

They offer a separate gluten-free menu, and the servers are very knowledgeable about their gluten-free options and the importance of avoiding cross-contamination.

We enjoyed the escarole salad, patatas bravas, grilled octopus, and roasted cauliflower sprinkled with blue cheese, bacon, and Marcona almonds.  Yum!

The Mill at Glen Ellen

Less than 10 miles north of Sonoma, you’ll find the Mill at Glen Ellen restaurant. Gluten-free customers highly recommend this restaurant for their array of gluten-free options.

Customers report that most items on the menu can safely be prepared gluten-free. Their gluten-free options include sandwiches, burgers, fries, pizza, and desserts. They also have a dedicated gluten-free fryer to prevent cross-contamination.

Customers also mention enjoying the outdoor seating overlooking a creek and appreciated that blankets were offered when it was chilly outside.
