Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is an enjoyable destination year-round. After months of social distancing and quarantining you may be considering whether traveling to Cabo San Lucas during COVID 19 is right for you? We traveled to Cabo for a wedding in October and here’s what we found.
Cabo San Lucas during COVID 19 Precautions
Overall, Cabo San Lucas is taking many precautions to prevent the spread of COVID 19. Common practices include social distancing, additional disinfecting, temperature checks, reduced occupancy rates in resorts and restaurants, and hand sanitizing requirements.
Wear a Mask
Whether outside or inside, at all resorts, restaurants, and shops staff wore masks at ALL times.
You are asked to wear masks when waiting in lines and shopping, but not when actively eating or drinking in a restaurant. You are also not required to wear masks when at outdoor swimming pools.
Additional Cleaning Measures
We found signs throughout our visit describing heightened sanitization practices including new standards for cleaning and disinfecting. We also observed an increased focus on disinfecting commonly touched surfaces and high traffic areas. This included focuses on common spaces where guests often pass through, like elevators, lobbies, and dining areas.
Cabo San Lucas during COVID 19 –Social Distancing
Social distancing is also practiced in Cabo San Lucas during COVID 19. This includes tables placed further apart in restaurants, lines with markings six feet apart, and signs requesting that visitors follow social distancing practices.
Although there are social distancing practices in place, not all visitors follow those practices. Multiple times we were in elevators with our masks on and other visitors entered without a mask and did not honor the social distancing guidelines. At the pool, we selected chairs away from others, to later have people pull up a chair right next to us.
Cabo San Lucas Restaurants and Bars
In October, there were many restaurants and bars open. However, we were unable to walk into a bar and only order drinks. Most bars required that food was ordered with drinks. This may not apply to every establishment but it was our experience. We assumed there may have been COVID 19 related restrictions on only serving alcohol.
To help reduce the chance of spreading germs, most restaurants offered digital menus. The digital menus can be accessed with a cell phone QR code app. If you don’t have a cell phone available, regular menus are available upon request.
Buffet-style service was available for breakfast at our resort. However, to reduce the spread of germs, buffets were no longer self-serve. Instead, items were dished up by restaurant staff.
Temperature Checks and Hand Sanitizer
Prior to entering restaurants or participating in activities or excursions, your temperature will be taken. To further prevent the spread of germs you may also be asked to use hand sanitizer prior to entry.
Cabo San Lucas Activities
Gym
While the gym at our resort was open, guests were asked to make a reservation to keep the occupancy low. Disinfectant cleaning products were readily available throughout the gym to encourage good hygiene practices.
Spa Services
Spa services were also available at our resort. We again noticed additional disinfecting practices and service providers wore a mask and a face shield for added safety.
Excursions
Excursions are available, however, as an added safety measure most have reduced the number of people allowed at one time. You may want to make reservations in advance if there is a specific excursion you don’t want to miss out on.
Nearby Towns
During our stay, we considered visiting some smaller nearby towns. However, we were told that many shops and restaurants, in smaller communities, are still closed due to COVID 19.
Appreciation
The people and businesses in Cabo San Lucas are trying to rebound from the impact that COVID 19 has had on tourism. Historically, the service in Cabo has been good and we have found the staff to be friendly. However, on this trip, we felt a heightened level of appreciation and gratitude from businesses and their staff. Tourism is the livelihood for many people in Cabo, and they were very appreciative when we visited their restaurants and shops.
Is Traveling to Cabo San Lucas During COVID 19 Right for You?
Is traveling to Cabo San Lucas during COVID 19 right for you? This is a question that you must determine for yourself. There are many resorts, restaurants, and shops open providing you an array of options while visiting. However, you will also find many businesses that are closed or that have gone out of business due to COVID 19.

I was wondering about once at our hotel, getting a rude to Costco or Walmart for supplies. We are at Villa de Arco and those stores are close by but who do we call? & what is cost?
Hello, you have a couple of options. The Villa Del Arco is close to both. You can get a taxi from the resort and the cost is around $8 one way. There are standard rates for taxis in Cabo. There are also taxis waiting when you leave the store. So getting a ride both ways is simple. If you want to save a few dollars you can also take the local public bus to Walmart and take a taxi back. We’ve done both but a taxi really is the easiest. Enjoy your stay!
